Little Nellie Organ – Christmas Oil
Little Nellie Organ, born in 1903 in Ireland, was a young girl known for her deep love for God. Her parents named her Ellen, but everyone called her Nellie. She was the youngest of four children. Sadly, her mother passed away when Nellie was just three years old, and she was sent to live in an orphanage run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Cork.
Though she was very young, Nellie showed an extraordinary understanding of God and the Eucharist. She called Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament “Holy God” and longed to receive Holy Communion. Even though the usual age for First Communion was much older, the priests and nuns were so moved by her faith that they allowed her to receive her First Communion at the age of four.
Nellie was often sick and suffered greatly from tuberculosis and other illnesses. Despite her pain, she was cheerful and offered her suffering to God. She passed away at the age of four and a half in 1908, leaving behind a legacy of love for the Eucharist.
Little Nellie Organ is often remembered as a model for children who wish to grow closer to Jesus, especially through the Eucharist. Pope Pius X was inspired by her story and later lowered the age for children to receive their First Communion, allowing them to encounter Jesus at a younger age.
