Patroness of the Disabled, Educators, and Those Who Serve with Compassion

St. Angela Merici, a woman of gentle strength and unwavering charity, lived in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. Born in 1474 in Desenzano del Garda, Angela experienced suffering early in life. She lost her parents and beloved sister at a young age, a grief that deepened her empathy and fueled her longing to serve others, especially the most vulnerable in society. Her own trials became the foundation for her life of loving service and wisdom.

Angela felt a strong call to devote herself to the education and spiritual care of young girls, especially those from poor or marginalized backgrounds. In an era when girls were often overlooked in society and the Church, she founded the Company of St. Ursula, later known as the Ursuline Sisters, the first religious community dedicated to teaching girls outside the cloister. Her vision was to form women of virtue and faith who could shape families and society with compassion and strength.

Throughout her life, Angela remained attentive to the suffering of others—especially those who were disabled, sick, or abandoned. She taught that every person, regardless of their limitations, has great dignity and purpose in God’s eyes. Her loving heart welcomed the disabled and the broken, seeing in them the face of Christ. Angela herself endured health struggles with grace and patience, offering her sufferings for the good of others.
