Blessed Laura Evangelista Alvarado Cardozo, lovingly known as Mother Mary of the Sacred Heart, was a Venezuelan woman whose life reflected boundless compassion and a deep love for Christ in the poor and the suffering. Born in 1875, she heard God’s call from an early age and devoted herself entirely to serving the least of His children. Inspired by the spirituality of the Augustinian Recollects, she embraced a life of humility, service, and deep prayer.
Guided by the Holy Spirit, she founded the Augustinian Recollect Sisters of the Heart of Jesus, a congregation dedicated to caring for the sick, the elderly, and the abandoned. Her vision was clear—to bring the tender love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the forgotten members of society. Through countless acts of charity, building homes for the elderly, and offering education to the marginalized, Blessed Laura left an enduring legacy of mercy and hope.
Despite facing numerous challenges, she persevered in her mission with joy and trust in God’s providence. Her life stands as a testimony to the power of love poured out in humble service. Recognized as the Patroness of the Augustinian Recollect Mission, she continues to inspire religious communities and lay faithful alike to be instruments of God’s compassion in a hurting world.
