The life of Blessed Laura Vicuña is a beautiful story of innocence, sacrifice, and unwavering love for Christ in the face of suffering. Born in 1891 in Santiago, Chile, Laura’s childhood was marked by hardship. After her father’s early death, her mother struggled to provide for the family and entered into a relationship outside of marriage, which caused Laura much sorrow. Despite these difficulties, Laura found joy, strength, and purpose in her faith.

Laura was entrusted to the care of the Salesian Sisters, where she grew in love for Jesus and Mary. From a young age, she offered herself to God in prayer, asking for the conversion of her mother. Her greatest desire was for her mother to return to a life of grace. Laura’s courage was tested when she faced abuse and mistreatment from her mother’s partner. Yet, instead of despair, she turned to God with trust and forgiveness.

In her final illness, Laura offered her sufferings and her life itself for the salvation of her mother’s soul. Shortly before her death at the age of 12, she told her mother: “Mama, I am dying, but I am happy because I have offered my life for you. I asked Jesus for this.” Her sacrifice bore fruit—her mother repented and changed her life, returning to God.
