The story of Blessed Martin Lumbreras y Peralta is one of heroic courage, passionate missionary spirit, and deep love for souls. Born into nobility in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1598, Martin was drawn not to privilege but to the cross of Christ. As a young man, he entered the Order of St. Augustine, dedicating his life to the Gospel and to the mission fields far from home.

From the very beginning, Martin’s heart burned with a desire to bring Christ to those who had never heard His name. That desire brought him to the Philippines, and then ultimately to Japan, where Christianity was strictly forbidden. With the fires of persecution raging, Martin, along with his companion Blessed Melchior Sánchez Pérez, secretly entered Japan to strengthen the underground Church. There, they ministered in hiding, bringing the sacraments, encouragement, and hope to the persecuted faithful.

In 1632, after being discovered and arrested, Martin endured torture and imprisonment with unwavering faith. Refusing to renounce Christ, he was burned alive—embracing martyrdom as a final offering of love. His death was not one of defeat, but of victory—a seed planted in blood, which bore fruit in the generations of believers that followed.
