The Martyrs of Compiègne were a community of sixteen Carmelite nuns who, in the midst of the French Revolution’s violent persecution of the Church, offered their lives for peace and the preservation of the faith. Arrested in 1794 during the Reign of Terror, these brave women were condemned simply for living their religious vocation in defiance of revolutionary atheism.

Despite facing imminent execution by guillotine, the sisters displayed remarkable serenity, singing hymns of praise and forgiveness as they processed through the streets to their deaths. Their final words were prayers for the Church, their persecutors, and the suffering people of France. Witnesses to their martyrdom were struck by the peace and joy that radiated from these women even in their final moments, reminding all that true freedom and peace come from God alone.
