St. Alphonsus Liguori, born in 1696 near Naples, Italy, was a brilliant lawyer, priest, and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). Though highly accomplished in his early years, Alphonsus sought something greater than worldly success: the salvation of souls and the glory of God. He left his legal career behind and gave his life to serving the poor, preaching missions, and guiding countless souls through his writings on prayer and moral theology.

Later in life, St. Alphonsus suffered intensely from severe arthritis. His condition became so debilitating that his neck was permanently bent forward, and his body twisted with pain. Despite this, he continued to write, preach, and lead his religious community with tireless love and dedication. His sufferings, rather than defeating him, became offerings of love to God and a source of deep spiritual insight.

His renowned works, including The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, continue to nourish souls today, reminding us of God’s mercy and the power of perseverance in prayer.
