St. Angela Merici, born in Desenzano, Italy, in 1474, is remembered as a visionary leader in education and a compassionate friend to the poor and marginalized. She lived in a time when education was often inaccessible, especially for girls and those with disabilities, yet Angela believed deeply in the dignity and worth of every human soul. Her life was devoted to lifting up the lowly, teaching the ignorant, and embracing those whom society often overlooked.

Angela herself experienced great hardship and loss. Orphaned as a young girl, she turned her suffering into compassion for others, spending her days in prayer and charitable service. She recognized that many children, especially the poor and handicapped, were left without guidance, love, or education. Out of this concern, she founded the Company of St. Ursula, a community of women dedicated not only to teaching girls but to nurturing their souls with the love of Christ.

Angela’s heart extended especially to those burdened with physical or emotional limitations. She saw in the handicapped not a problem to be solved but a precious soul to be loved and uplifted. Her tenderness and wisdom made her a powerful witness of God’s unconditional love for all people, regardless of their abilities or limitations.

Today, St. Angela Merici is honored as the patron saint of handicapped people, and of those who work in education, particularly in helping children with special needs. Her intercession is sought by parents, teachers, caregivers, and anyone seeking to nurture the gifts of those facing physical, emotional, or mental challenges.
