St. Anthony Zaccaria, born in 1502 in Cremona, Italy, lived a life that beautifully wove together his vocation as both a physician of the body and a healer of souls. Before entering the priesthood, Anthony was trained and practiced as a doctor, caring tenderly for the sick and the poor of his city. But his desire to heal went deeper than physical ailments; he longed to restore hearts and minds to the love of God.

Recognizing the deep spiritual needs of his time, Anthony left his medical career and became a priest. He saw firsthand that both body and soul require healing, and he sought to bring the light of Christ’s mercy to a Church and society in need of renewal. With a burning heart for reform, he founded the Clerics Regular of St. Paul, also known as the Barnabites, a community dedicated to preaching, confession, and education.

As a priest, St. Anthony Zaccaria preached powerfully on repentance, the Eucharist, and devotion to the Passion of Christ. He tirelessly ministered to both the physical and spiritual needs of his flock, blending the compassion of a physician with the zeal of a shepherd. His life became a model for Christian physicians and caregivers—reminding them that true healing comes when we serve the whole person: body, mind, and soul.

Today, St. Anthony Zaccaria is honored as a patron of physicians, as well as reformers and those seeking renewal in their personal and professional lives. His intercession is sought by doctors, healthcare workers, and all those who care for the sick, reminding them that their work is a sacred calling.
