Patron Against Choking, Protector of the Throat, and Faithful Shepherd of Souls

St. Blaise, a beloved bishop and martyr of the 4th century, is most famously invoked as the patron against throat ailments and choking. Born in Sebastea, Armenia, Blaise was a physician by training who dedicated his medical skills and compassionate heart to caring for both people and animals. His love for the suffering led him to embrace the Christian faith more deeply, eventually becoming the bishop of his city during a time of fierce persecution.

During his time in hiding from Roman authorities, Blaise continued to heal the sick and tend to the needs of his flock. Tradition tells us that even wild animals sought his protection and care. One of the most well-known miracles attributed to him occurred when he saved a young boy who was choking on a fishbone. Through his prayer and the power of God, the boy was healed instantly. This miracle became the foundation of his role as protector against throat ailments.

Eventually arrested for his faith, Blaise refused to renounce Christ. He was beaten, tortured with iron combs used for wool, and ultimately beheaded for his steadfast love of God.

To this day, the Church celebrates the Blessing of Throats on his feast day, February 3rd, when candles are crossed over the faithful’s throats as a prayer for protection from illness and harm. St. Blaise’s life is a reminder of the healing power of prayer and the courage to remain faithful in times of suffering.
