Saint Edith Stein, also known as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was a German philosopher, nun, and martyr who lived from 1891 to 1942. She is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church, and is a patron saint of Europe.

Edith Stein was born into a Jewish family in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), and grew up in a secular and intellectual environment. She was a gifted student and became interested in philosophy at a young age.

In 1913, Stein became a student of Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, at the University of Göttingen. She completed her doctoral thesis on empathy, and went on to become a lecturer and writer.

In 1922, Stein read the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, and  deeply moved by the saint’s spiritual journey. She began to explore the Catholic faith, and baptized in 1922.

Stein entered the Discalced Carmelite Order in 1933, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She continued to write and lecture, and her work focused on the intersection of faith and reason.
