Description
St. Bernadette Soubirous was born on January 7, 1844, in Lourdes, France, into a very poor but deeply Catholic family. From a young age, Bernadette suffered from asthma and other health problems. Her family so impoverished that they lived in a former jail cell. And Bernadette often considered slow in school due to her poor health and limited education. Yet despite all this, her heart was humble, pure, and open to the divine.
On February 11, 1858, at the age of 14, Bernadette went with her sister and a friend. To gather firewood near the Grotto of Massabielle. It was there that she experienced her first vision of a beautiful lady. Dressed in white with a blue sash and a golden rose on each foot. Over the course of 18 apparitions from February to July of that year. The Lady revealed herself as “The Immaculate Conception”. A title that confirmed the dogma declared by the Church just four years earlier.
During one of the apparitions, the Blessed Virgin Mary asked Bernadette to dig in the ground and drink from the spring that would appear there. Though initially unclear, a spring indeed emerged—one that would become known for miraculous healings and is now the source of Lourdes’ famous holy water.
Bernadette faced skepticism, ridicule, and interrogation from civil authorities and even from some clergy. Yet she never wavered, repeating the Lady’s words with simplicity and conviction. She never sought fame or attention and often said, “The Lady used me like a broom. When she was done, she put me back in my place.”
In 1866, Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers and spent the rest of her life in the convent. There, she served as an infirmary assistant and later as sacristan. Her health continued to deteriorate, and she endured great suffering with remarkable patience and grace. She died at just 35 years old, on April 16, 1879, whispering her last words: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me, a poor sinner.”
Her body exhumed multiple times during the canonization process and found to be incorrupt, a sign of holiness in Catholic tradition. She was canonized a saint in 1933 by Pope Pius XI.
Her life reminds us that God often chooses the lowly and simple to reveal His greatest messages.
