St. Maria Goretti was born in Italy in 1890 to a poor farming family. Despite their hardships, Maria raised in a home rooted in strong faith. From a young age, she showed a deep love for God, a gentle spirit, and a strong sense of virtue. At just 11 years old, attacked by a young man named Alessandro Serenelli, who tried to force her into sin. When she refused, choosing to protect her purity, she brutally stabbed multiple times. Before she died the next day, she forgave her attacker, saying, “I forgive Alessandro… and I want him to be in heaven with me.”

Her act of mercy deeply impacted Alessandro, who later repented while in prison after a dream of Maria offering him lilies. After serving his sentence, he lived a life of humility and even attended Maria’s canonization in 1950, standing beside her mother. St. Maria Goretti became one of the youngest canonized saints and honored as a patron of purity, youth, and forgiveness. Her legacy continues to inspire hearts around the world, showing that holiness is possible at any age and that forgiveness, even in the face of evil, is a powerful witness to God’s love.
