Description

Our Lady of Knock Candle 3

The Our Lady of Knock candle 3 is in honour of  Mary’s visit to Knock in Co Mayo.

The candle symbolizes light in the darkness of life especially individual life. Also, it is the symbol of holy illumination of the spirit of truth.  Lit in times of death, they signify the light in the next world.  Also, they represent Christ as the light of the world.

Lighting a candle is a traditional form of expression. It is a long-held practice in many cultural, family and faith traditions.  Consequently, the practice is common across international borders and societies. Lighting candles can bring serenity, focus and comfort to participants.

St Anne was the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus.  This candle is dedicated to the three prominent figures in the salvation history of mankind.  Consequently, we remember to light a a candle to them at Christmas time.

Meditation

Lighting a candle is a traditional way to show the intensity of our thoughts and feelings.  Consequently, groups of people have taken up the practice of lighting candles to show support for many causes.  Also, the practice, when done by large numbers of people, helps build a sense of solidarity for the movement, as well as raise awareness regarding the cause.   Also, lighting a candle in memory of a lost loved one is a centuries-old practice. The practice gives the candle lighter a specific time to reflect on the deceased as well as to pray or meditate on their relationship with the loved one.

Christianity

In Christianity the candle is commonly used in worship both for decoration and ambiance.  Also, it is a symbol that represents the light of God or, specifically, the light of Christ. The altar candle is often placed on the altar, usually in pairs.  Light is everywhere the symbol of joy and of life-giving power, as darkness is of death and destruction.

In Christianity, from the very first, fire and light are conceived as symbols, as visible manifestations, of the divine nature and the divine presence. Christ is the true Light.  At his transfiguration, his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.  Also, when the Holy Ghost descended upon the apostles, there appeared unto them cloven tongues of fire.  It sat upon each of them.  At the conversion of St Paul there shined round him a great light from heaven.  The glorified Christ is represented as standing in the midst of seven candlesticks … his head and hairs white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes as a flame of fire. Christians are children of Light at perpetual war with the powers of darkness. Light represents the purifying presence of God.
