Maria Marchetta is one of these souls, for 14 years she remained suffering in bed, but this is not what made her exceptional, but “the how” she stayed there to live and suffer.

The parents Domenico and Filomena Bonelli, peasants, had five children of which Maria was the eldest and in the house they lived a Franciscan spirituality in a frank and simple way and little Maria was able to give vent to the vivacity of character, to her great desire to live, exuberant, noisy, almost reckless.

The adolescence passed between school, family, neighbors, parish and Catholic Action; to attend middle school she enters the Collegio S. Chiara of Tricarico (MT) directed by the Sisters Disciples, but after a few months, amidst the hesitation of the nuns, she begins to feel a strange pain in her legs, which will become accentuated during the holidays at home, for Christmas 1951.

In January 1952 he returned to the College to resume the second trimester. But the situation worsened, his legs reacted painfully to every movement. With weakness in supporting the trunk in an upright position. With an increasingly progressive need to stay in position lying down to have some peace.

At the age of 13 she had to leave the Tricarico College for good. And return to Grassano in her characteristic district of Capolegrotte. Distressed but with the hope of recovering from the rheumatic crisis that had struck her at such a young age.
