Servant of God Manuel son of Manuel Mendes and his wife Maria da Conceição Rodrigues.
So, he awoke early to religious life, joining the Patriarchal Seminary of Santarém. Manuel sent to Rome where he obtained a doctorate in Theology at the Athenaeum of Sant’Apollinare. He received priestly ordination on May 27, 1899 .
As a result, he was a professor at the Seminary and at the National Lyceum of Santarém. Actually, appointed vice-rector of the Guarda Seminary of Cathedral. Or, he stood out with some activity in the press.
However, on December 9, 1915, he appointed by Pope Benedict XV Bishop of Portalegre. Ordained on March 3, 1916, in the church of Carmo, in Torres Novas. He appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Évora (as Titular Archbishop of Filipopolis) entering the new diocese. Already in the capacity of Metropolitan Archbishop, on the death of former prelate.
On the other hand, he took possession of the Archdiocese of Évora on February 11, 1920. Starting a remarkable journey of rebuilding the diocese, giving priority to the formation of the clergy.
Most importantly, on 1 July 1933 he awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ and on 8 June 1949. He awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Benemerence.
Above all, his Cause of Beatification is ongoing, having been initiated by Pope Paul VI on February 11, 1972. Already serving as a Servant of God.
