Saint Bernard of Clairvaux was a Cistercian monk and mystic who lived in the 12th century in France. He is known for his deep spirituality, his writings, and his role in the reform of the Benedictine order, which led to the creation of the Cistercian order. Bernard’s writings have greatly influenced both Catholic and Protestant theology. He often associated with the concept of the love of God and devotion to the Virgin Mary. In 1830, Pope Pius VIII declared Bernard a Doctor of the Church.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was a French abbot and a major leader in the revitalization of Benedictine monasticism through the nascent Order of Cistercians. He was born in 1090, in Fontaines, near Dijon, France, and he died on August 20, 1153. He canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1174.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux contributed significantly to the Christian theology of the Middle Ages. He played key roles in the development and spread of the Cistercian order, in the resolution of the papal schism of the 12th century, and in the promotion of the Second Crusade.

Traditionally, St. Bernard recognized as the patron saint of candlemakers, beekeepers, and the Cistercian order, among others. The reasons for these particular patronages vary. For example, his association with beekeepers supposedly comes from the story that when he preaching in the fields, a swarm of bees settled on his book and he able to preach without stung.
