Saint Blaise is venerated in the Eastern and Western Churches due to many miracles attributed to him. He the bishop of Sebastea in Armenia and martyred in the early 4th century. Blaise one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, and he is the patron saint of ailments of the throat in the Catholic tradition.
One of the most popular legends about Saint Blaise tells that he approached by a mother whose only child was choking on a fish bone. Blaise prayed over the child, and he miraculously recovered, hence becoming the patron saint against choking and throat diseases.
The blessing of Saint Blaise a ritual performed on his feast day, February 3rd, where the throats of the faithful blessed. This blessing may done by touching the throat of each person with two candles blessed on Candlemas Day (February 2nd) and crossed in a V shape, and then saying the prayer of Saint Blaise. This practice known as the Blessing of the Throats.
Here the typical prayer that said during the blessing:
“Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
It’s worth noting that, like with all saints, the veneration of Saint Blaise is not about worshiping the saint himself. Instead, Catholics honor saints as holy men and women who lived exemplary lives of faith, and they ask the saints to intercede (pray) for them to God.
