Oil Dedicated to St Cosmas and Damian 5 (Patron for Identical Twins)
St Cosmas and Damian 5 (Patron for Identical Twins) from A Blessed Call To Love, Ireland.
Saints Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers, physicians, and early Christian martyrs who died in the late third century. They practiced their profession in the seaport of Aegeae, then in the Roman province of Syria. They were famed for their skills and kindness, refusing to take any money for their services, which led to them being named “Ανάργυροι” (Unmercenary).
While it’s common for specific saints to associated with specific causes or patronages, as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Saints Cosmas and Damian not specifically recognized as protectors of children in any widespread or official context. Instead, they most often invoked as patron saints of physicians, surgeons, dentists, and pharmacists due to their history as healers. Their legend as unmercenary physicians has led to their veneration in this context.
If there have been developments or local traditions associating them with children’s protection after my last training cut-off, I would not have this information. Please refer to the most current resources or consult with a religious authority for the most up-to-date information.
It’s worth noting that different traditions may have different patron saints for the same cause. For example, in the Catholic tradition, Saint Nicholas and the Guardian Angels often invoked as protectors of children. Meanwhile, in the Orthodox tradition, Saints Stylianos and Nectarios known for their special intercessions for children.
