St Eulalia of Merida 2 (Patron for Runaways) from A Blessed Call To Love, Ireland.
Saint Eulalia of Mérida is indeed recognized as the patron saint for runaways. She was a young Christian martyr who lived during the 4th century in what is now Spain. Her story and martyrdom are revered in Catholicism.
Eulalia was born in Mérida, Spain, around the year 290 AD. She was raised in a Christian family and dedicated herself to her faith from a young age. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who persecuted Christians, Eulalia openly professed her faith and refused to renounce it.
According to tradition, Eulalia was just a young girl, possibly around 12 years old, when she faced persecution. She defied the Roman authorities and publicly denounced the emperor’s actions against Christians. As a result, she was arrested and subjected to various forms of torture in an attempt to force her to renounce her faith.
Despite enduring severe torment, Eulalia remained steadfast in her beliefs. It is said that during her trial, she bravely proclaimed her dedication to Christianity and expressed her desire to be martyred for her faith. The exact details of her tortures vary in different accounts, but it is generally agreed that she endured great suffering, including being whipped, burned with torches, and placed in a boiling caldron.
Ultimately, Eulalia’s young life was sacrificed for her unwavering commitment to her Christian beliefs. She is believed to have died in 304 AD. Her martyrdom made a profound impression on the local Christian community, and she was venerated as a saint soon after her death.
