St Margaret of Cortona 4 (Patron for Single Mothers) from A Blessed Call To Love, Ireland.
Known as the patron saint for single mothers, was born in 1247 in Laviano, Italy. Her early life was marked by tragedy and hardship, which ultimately shaped her remarkable journey of faith and devotion.
Margaret’s father was a small-time farmer, and her mother died when she was just seven years old. In her teenage years, Margaret fell in love with a young nobleman and bore him a son out of wedlock. However, her lover soon murdered under mysterious circumstances, leaving Margaret devastated and alone.
Filled with guilt and shame, Margaret turned to a life of penance and sought forgiveness for her past mistakes. She took refuge in the Franciscan friary of Cortona, where she underwent a profound spiritual transformation. Inspired by the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, Margaret embraced a life of poverty, charity, and deep devotion to Christ.
Margaret’s compassion and love for others, particularly for women in similar circumstances, led her to establish a community known as the “Poverelle” or the “Poor Ones.” This community offered support, guidance, and shelter to single mothers and other marginalized women, helping them find hope and dignity in their difficult situations.
Despite facing skepticism and criticism from some members of society. Margaret’s devotion to God and her unwavering commitment to serving those in need continued to inspire others. She devoted her life to prayer, fasting, and acts of charity, becoming a beacon of hope and compassion in her community.
St. Margaret of Cortona’s life is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the capacity for redemption. She revered as a model of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity with the marginalized, particularly single mothers. Her feast day celebrated on February 22nd. And her legacy lives on as a reminder that even in the face of adversity. Love and compassion can bring healing and restoration to broken lives.
