Oil Dedicated to St Pedro Poveda

St Pedro Poveda born on 3rd of December 1874 at Spain to a family of solid Christians José Poveda Montes and María Linarejos Castroverde Moreno. He taught at the seminary and continued his studies then received his licentiate in theology in Seville in 1900.

St Pedro ministered in Guadix to a group of people so poor they lived in caves. St Pedro built a school for the children and provided vocation training to the adults.

Father Pedro transferred to Spain and named a canon of the Basilica of Covadonga Asturius in 1906.

His time in Guadix had impressed St Pedro with the need for education for the poor. He prayed on it and wrote on the need for professional training for teachers. In 1911 he founded the Saint Teresa of Avila Academy the foundation of the modern Institución Teresiana. Pedro joined the Apostolic Union of Secular Priests in 1912. Wrote on the need for more teachers and opened teacher training centers.

Pedro’s Death

When the Civil War broke out he identified as an enemy by those who wished to dechristianize the schools. At dawn on July 28, 1936 a group of paramilitaries came to search his house. Fr. Pedro identified himself “I am a priest of Christ”. He was shot by firing squad for his faith and for the cause of Christian education. Father Poveda was sixty-one years old.
