Oil dedicated to St Peregrine

The Oil dedicated to St Peregrine is dedicated to the 13th-century Italian saint. He is the patron saint against cancer. The Lord cured a cancerous sore on his leg.

Peregrine was born in 1260 in Forlì, Italy to an affluent family. He lived a comfortable life as a youth. Also, his family politically opposed the papacy.

In 1283 the residents of Forlì were under interdict.  St. Philip Benizi, Prior General of the Friar Servants of Saint Mary, was sent to try to reconcile the divided community. While trying to preach in Forlì, Philip was heckled and struck by the eighteen-year-old Peregrine. He was driven from the city with insults and violence. Peregrine repented and asked Philip for forgiveness. St. Philip received him with kindness. The moment had a profound effect on Peregrine. Filled with remorse, he began to pray more and channel his energies into good works. A few years later, he joined the Servites in Siena and went on to be ordained a priest.

Peregrine’s ministry

Subsequently, he returned to his home to establish a Servite community.  There he was widely known for his preaching, penances, and counsel in the confessional.  It is said that he miraculously multiplied grain and wine during a severe shortage in his area.  People took to calling him the “Angel of Good Counsel,” so grateful were they for his wise advice so freely given.

One of the special penances he imposed on himself was to stand whenever it was not necessary to sit. When tired he would support himself on a choir stall. At the age of sixty, he developed an infection in his right leg.  His condition deteriorated to the point that the physician decided to amputate his leg.

Peregrine is healed of cancer

Also, Peregrine received a vision of Christ on the cross reaching out His hand to touch his impaired limb.  His cancerous leg was healed. He died in 1345 and was canonized in 1726.  St Peregrine is the patron of cancer patients

St Peregrine healing oil is dedicated to St Peregrine.  He was healed of a cancerous ulcer on his leg which was considered beyond saving. The fame of this event in 1325 spread rapidly around the Western Church. Christians, and especially the sick, began to invoke his name and seek his intercession for the relief of their suffering and even for a cure from sickness. The canonization of St. Peregrine in 1726 increased people’s devotion to him which spread to the universal Church.

The Servites

St Peregrine’s prayers are becoming more frequent because this was a person who knew suffering and sickness in his life and also knew the power of divine grace healing him. The Servite family is committed across the world to offering a “ministry of compassion”. Consequently, this is done in a spirit of service towards those who are sick and suffering. So whatever ailment you have go to St Peregrine.
