Oil Dedicated to St John Bosco
St John Bosco healing oil is dedicated to the Salesian priest popularly known as Don Bosco. He was an Italian Catholic priest, educator and writer of the 19th century. In Turin, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment. This method became known as the Salesian Preventive System.
John Bosco was a follower of the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales. Bosco was an ardent Marian devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Mary Help of Christians. He later dedicated his works to De Sales when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco. He cofounded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. They are a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls.
In 1876 Bosco founded a movement of laity, the Association of Salesian Cooperators. They had the same educational mission to the poor. In 1875, he began to publish the Salesian Bulletin. The Bulletin has remained in continuous publication up to today.
Tradition of oils
The tradition of anointing with sacred oil is very old indeed. It is used in sacraments and also as a devotional practice. The sick person is invited to apply oil on the part of their body they want healed. As they do so, they are asked to pray to whomever the oil is dedicated to. The Irish blessings oils do not have miraculous power. It is God who has the power to heal. Applying the oil while praying are important ways for us to express our faith in God’s power. Moreover, by doing so we place our trust in God.
