Saint Bede, also known as the Venerable Bede, was an English monk, scholar, and historian who lived in the 7th and 8th centuries. He is best known for his work “Ecclesiastical History of the English People,” which is considered one of the most important sources of information about early English history.
Bede was born in 672 AD in Northumbria, England, and he entered the monastery at Jarrow at the age of seven. He spent the rest of his life in the monastery, dedicating himself to prayer, study, and writing.
Bede was a prolific writer, and he produced many works on a wide range of subjects, including history, theology, and hagiography. His most famous work, “Ecclesiastical History of the English People,” completed in 731 AD and considered a masterpiece of medieval scholarship.
In addition to his writing, Bede known for his piety and his devotion to the monastic life. He was a skilled teacher, and he trained many other monks and scholars during his time at Jarrow.
Bede was also an important figure in the development of the Christian Church in England. He was instrumental in promoting the Roman form of Christianity, which eventually became the dominant form of Christianity in England.
St. Bede died in 735 AD, and he buried at the monastery at Jarrow. He later canonized by the Catholic Church, and his feast day celebrated on May 25th. He remembered as a brilliant scholar, a devout monk, and a major figure in the history of the English Church.
