Saint John Eudes was a French Catholic priest, preacher, and founder of two religious congregations in the 17th century. He is known for his devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and his efforts to reform the clergy and laity in France. St. John Eudes venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, and his feast day celebrated on August 19th.
John Eudes was born on November 14, 1601, in Ri, Normandy, France. Educated by the Jesuits and joined the Congregation of the Oratory in 1623. He ordained a priest in 1625 and became known for his preaching and pastoral work. The society’s purpose was to promote the education of priests and to provide spiritual guidance to the laity. The congregation’s members took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and known for their devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1648, St. John Eudes founded a second congregation, the Order of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, which provided shelter and rehabilitation for women who had involved in prostitution.
St. John Eudes was a prolific writer, and his works include devotional books, sermons, and spiritual treatises.
St. John Eudes died on August 19, 1680, in Caen, France. He was beatified by Pope Pius X in 1909 and canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925. He venerated as the patron saint of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. The Order of Our Lady of Charity, and the secular clergy. His life and works continue to inspire Catholics around the world to pursue a deeper devotion to Christ. And to work for the reform and renewal of the Church.
