Later he became a professor of moral philosophy and social ethics in the major seminary of Cracow and in the Faculty of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Lubin (where he became the Director of the Chair of Ethics and lectured for 25 years until his election for the Pope in 1978).
On January 13, 1964, he was nominated Archbishop of Cracow by Pope Paul VI Also, Paul VI made him a cardinal in June 26, 1967.
Cardinal Wojtyla took part in Vatican Council II. He made an important contribution to the elaboration of the Constitution Gaudium et spes. Also, he participated in all the assemblies of the Synod of Bishops.

He was the 2nd longeest serving pope in modern history. Pope Pius 1X served for nearly 32 years from 1846 to 1878. Also, John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope since the Dutch Pope Adrian 6th who served from 1522 to 1523.
Tradition of oils
The tradition of anointing with sacred oil is very old indeed. It is used in sacraments and also as a devotional practice. The sick person applies the oil and blesses themselves. As they do so, they are asked to pray to whomever the oil is dedicated to. The Irish blessings oils do not have miraculous power. It is God who has the power to heal. Applying the oil while praying are important ways for us to express our faith in God’s power. Moreover, by doing so we place our trust in God.
