Born in 1566 to a wealthy merchant family in Youghal, County Cork. At the age of twenty Collins went to the continent; wanting to join the cavalry he spent three years working in Brittany as a servant. There was revolt against the English and Scottish planters in Ulster. Captured by the English who attempted to get Dominic to reject Christ. When plague struck the Jesuit College, Collins tended to the sick and dying.

When the castle fell in 1602, all were immediately hanged, but for Collins and two others. The two remaining soldiers executed, while Collins brought before Baron Mountjoy, the Lord Deputy of Ireland, who tried to persuade him to join the English army and the English Church.
