Blessed Stanley Rother is dedicated to the first American born martyr
Stanley Francis Rother was an Oklahoma diocesan priest. He was killed in his parish rectory in Guatemala on July 28, 1981. Subsequently, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City opened a Cause for Beatification for Father Rother on October 5, 2007. It was led by Archbishop Emeritus Eusebius J. Beltran. The archdiocesan phase of the cause was closed on July 20, 2010.
On September 3, 2014, the Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, Archbishop of Oklahoma City, presented the Positio of Father Rother to the Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints in Rome.
Also, on June 14, 2015, the Commission of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints in Rome voted to formally recognized Oklahoma’s Servant of God Father Rother, a martyr. And, on Dec. 2, 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized Father Rother as a martyr for the faith, clearing the way for him to be beatified.
Following that, Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect for the Congregation, celebrated the ceremony for Blessed Stanley on September 23, 2017, in Oklahoma City.
