The Oil dedicated to Saint Ubald Baldassini is for the Italian saint who is a patron for sick children.
Ubald Baldassini was born of a noble family in Gubbio, Italy. He was an orphan when he was young and educated by his uncle, the Bishop of Gubbio. Also, he was named deacon of the cathedral. He reformed the canons. Then he left a few years later to become a hermit. Ubald was dissuaded from the eremitical life by Peter of Rimini. He returned to Gubbio in 1126, was named Bishop of Perugia but refused the honor. He became Bishop of Gubbio in 1128. Ubald persuaded Emperor Frederick II not to sack Gubbio, as he had Spoleto. It happened during one of his forays into Italy. Ubald was ill for the last two years of his life. He died at Gubbio on May 16 and was canonized in 1192. His feast day is May 16th.
Tradition of oils
The tradition of anointing with sacred oil is very old indeed. Used in sacraments and also as a devotional practice. The sick person applies the oil and blesses themselves. The bottles of oils going out are accompanied by a prayer card. In addition, they are personalized for the saint to whom the oil is dedicated to.
