In 634 AD, Aidan sent by the Irish monk Saint Senan to help King Oswald of Northumbria in the north of England, who had recently converted to Christianity. Aidan established a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne, which became a center for learning and missionary work.
Aidan known for his humility, generosity, and kindness towards the people he encountered during his missionary work. He known to travel on foot, often barefoot, throughout the countryside, spreading the word of God and helping those in need. He also established a school at Lindisfarne. Where young men could trained as priests and missionaries.
One of Aidan’s most significant contributions was his establishment of a system of parishes throughout Northumbria, which allowed the local people to receive pastoral care and guidance from a priest in their own community. Aidan himself said to have traveled extensively throughout the region, baptizing and converting people to Christianity.
Aidan died in 651 AD and buried at Lindisfarne. He was revered as a saint in both the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. And his feast day celebrated on August 31st. His legacy continued to influence the spread of Christianity in the north of England for centuries, and his humble approach to missionary work has inspired countless people throughout history.
