Description

St Eulalia of Barcelona healing oil

The St Eulalia of Barcelona healing oil is dedicated to St Eulalia a sanctified virgin, the forerunner of professed nuns. Martyred at age 13 or 14 in the persecutions of Diocletian.

The Martyr Eulalia lived in Spain, near the city of Barcelona.  She was raised by her parents in piety and the Christian Faith.  At fourteen years of age, the maiden spent a solitary life praying. She occupied in prayer, the reading of Holy Scripture, and handicrafts.

Persecution of Christians

During the time of persecution against Christians under the emperors Diocletian (284-305) and Maximian (305-311), the governor Dacian arrived in the city of Barcionum to rid it of Christians. Hearing of this, the maiden secretly left her home at night, and by morning had made her way into the city. Pushing her way through the throng of people, the girl made a bold denunciation of the judge for forcing people to renounce the True God in order to offer sacrifice to devils instead.

Dacian gave orders to strip the girl and beat her with rods, but she steadfastly endured the torment and told the judge that the Lord would deliver her from the pain. They tied the martyr to a tree and tore her skin with iron claws, and they then burned her wounds with torches.

The Martyr Eulalia began to pray that the Lord would take her to Heaven to Himself, and with this prayer, she died. People saw a white dove come from her mouth and fly up to Heaven. Then a sudden snowstorm covered the martyr’s naked body like a white garment

Three days later, the martyr’s parents came and wept before her hanging body, but they were also glad that their daughter would be numbered among the saints.

Tradition of oils

The tradition of anointing with sacred oil is very old indeed. It is used in sacraments and also as a devotional practice. Moreover, it is sacramental. The sick person applies the oil and blesses themselves.  As they do so, they are asked to pray to whomever the oil is dedicated to. The Irish blessings oils do not have miraculous power.  It is God who has the power to heal. Prayer and a gesture of faith, like applying the oil, are important ways for us to express our faith in God’s power. By doing so we place our trust in God.

The Irish Blessings oils are dedicated to the Holy Spirit, Our Lady, and the saints. The oils come through prayer.  And they are placed on their designated altars for a period of prayer before being sent out.  Also, the oils are of therapeutic grade.
The bottles of oils going out are accompanied with a prayer card.  They are personalised for the saint to whom the oil is dedicated to.  In conclusion, we hope St Eulalia’s oils will bring comfort all over the world.
