St Juliana of Nicomedia 1 Healing Oil

Description

The St Juliana of Nicomedia 1 Healing Oil is dedicated to the 3rd century virgin and martyr.

Saint Juliana is said to have suffered Christian martyrdom during the Diocletian persecution in 304. She was popular in the Middle Ages in the Netherlands, as the patron saint of sickness.

Both the Latin and Greek Churches mention a holy martyr Juliana in their lists of saints, for 16 February. She was born in Cumae in Campaia.

A Christian virgin of Cumae, Italy, martyred for the faith when she refused to marry a Roman prefect. She suffered terrible ordeals and was finally beheaded. One tradition reports that Juliana actually suffered martyrdom at Nicomedia and that her relics were transferred to Cumae. She is depicted in liturgical art as surrounded by flames, or binding the devil.

Tradition of oils
