St Marculf

St Marculf a saint born in the Saxon colony of Bayeux in Normandy around 500 AD and who best known for the healing of scrofula. Also visited Jersey himself where miracles ascribed to him.

Died on May 1, 558, in the Îles Saint-Marcouf off the east coast of the Cotentin Peninsula. His relics transferred to the abbey of Corbény in Champagne. Where they played a part in the coronation ceremonies of kings of Franc, crowned at Reims.

The traditional power ascribed to French and English kings to cure scrofula (the king’s Evil) by the laying on of hands derives from the efficacy of the relics of Marcouf, according to the chronicle of Joan of Arc, Chronique de la Pucelle.

Attracted numerous disciples and built a monastery. It became a great pilgrimage center after his death on May 1. St. Marculf as a patron who cured skin diseases. And as late as 1680, sufferers made pilgrimages to his shrine at Nanteuil and bathed in the spring.

Making his second journey to the court to obtain the confirmation of the donations made to his monasteries. A hare, pressed hard by the hounds, took refuge under his habit, but the hunters compelling the Saint to let it go, the poor animal ran away, while the horses and hounds remained immovable.

He founded a monastery at Nanteuil, France, and served as its first abbot. After touching his relics, French kings reported being cure scrofula, a disease known for centuries as The King’s Evil.
